The Doro PhoneEasy 740: Finally, An Android Phone For Your Grandparents

doro3Accessibility has become quite the theme here at Mobile World Congress: Nokia and ZTE have announced new low-cost devices to bring push Windows Phone into developing markets, and Google chairman Eric Schmidt highlighted the importance of connecting all people. Sweden-based Doro is trying to help in their own way -- the company has recently pulled back the curtain on the PhoneEasy 740, an Android-powered smartphone meant to help the older folks in your life stay connected.

Verizon CFO says shared data plans coming mid-year

VerizonWe've already from Verizon's CEO Lowell McAdam that the carrier was planning to offer shared data plans. And leaks have indicated that the carrier is already prepping its backend system for the change. Now CFO Fran Shammo has narrowed down the time frame a bit for us, telling a group of investors that family data plans should debut towards the middle of the year. But, he was quick to clarify this isn't as simple as setting a launch date. The shift to the new billing system will take time and not everyone will be migrated on day one. Still, Shammo indicated it will be an important part of the ongoing transition to 4G and its future plans for mobile dominance.

Update: We mistakenly identified Fran Shammo as the CTO when, in fact, he is the CFO.

Ironing Your Clothes Would Be a Million Times Easier with This Simple Gadget [Desired]

For the perpetually un-growed up among us, ironing clothes without steaming in creases in the wrong places is mostly totally impossible. Iron one side, wrinkle the crap out of the other. Repeat. Hopefully this genius invention from Quirky will save me (us, I mean us) from spending 15 minutes ironing one dress shirt. More »

ASUS rebrands its tablets 'Transformer Pads,' announces the high-end Infinity Series with either Tegra 3 or Snapdragon's S4 chip

Yes, another one. Less than four months after announcing the original T201 Transformer Prime and slightly modified TF700T, ASUS is adding uno más to the collection. And don't be fooled by the name: though the company is rebranding its tablet line "Transformer Pads," the newly announced Infinity Series looks a lot like a product we've already seen. Essentially, it's the TF700T with a dual-core Qualcomm MSM 8960 Snapdragon S4 CPU and an optional LTE radio. Now, before you gasp that ASUS has ditched NVIDIA, hear this: there will still be a Tegra 3 option, but that's just the WiFi-only version; the 3G / 4G versions will pack the S4 chip.

Additionally, there will be a lower-end 16GB option (the TF700T was only available in 32GB and 64GB flavors). Otherwise, the specs are the same, including dual 8MP / 2MP cameras, 1GB of RAM, HDMI and a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200, Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display. This time around, it has Gorilla Glass 2, but that's a mild spec bump indeed.

Unlike the original Prime, which shipped with Honeycomb but updated to Ice Cream Sandwich shortly after going on sale, the Infinity Pad will run Android 4.0 out of the box. It also comes with 8GB of free lifetime ASUS WebStorage and is rated for 10 hours of battery life (16 with that signature keyboard dock, sold separately). No word yet on pricing or availability. In any case, though, we wouldn't be surprised if ASUS gave birth to another tablet between now and then.

Apple Patent Shows 3-D Interface Calibrated by Eye Positioning

Depending on the lighting of your environment, a 3-D display could render differently. Image: Free Patents Online

In a recent patent application, Apple shows how an immersive, adjustable 3-D user interface could be implemented in future mobile devices.

The patent, titled “Three Dimensional User Interface Effects on a Display by Using Properties of Motion,” illustrates how eye-tracking and other sensor data could be used to display a 3-D user interface that automatically calibrates itself to a user’s positioning and ambient environment.

The method would use data from your iDevice’s compass, GPS, accelerometer and gyrometer to calculate your real-time frame of reference. On top of that, your hardware’s front-facing camera would perform eye tracking. This would allow the device to show “more realistic virtual 3-D depictions of the objects on the device’s display,” according to the patent filing.

Users would be able to see the sides and back of a 3-D object onscreen. Image: Free Patents Online

No current Apple devices run 3-D displays, so for even a glimpse at where Apple may be going with its patent, we would have to turn to the HTC EVO 3D. This smartphone uses the parallax barrier technique for glasses-free 3-D viewing, but seeing any semblance of a 3-D effect is difficult due to the technology’s tight viewing angles. Indeed, current systems like that in the EVO 3D don’t take user-positioning information into consideration to render the 3-D effect.

Ambient lighting would also be factored into Apple’s virtual 3-D environment, as the image above shows. If an onscreen item had a shadow behind it, that shadow would dynamically change position depending on the location of a light source. And eye tracking would allow you to see not only frontal views, but also the sides and rear views of 3-D objects.

Rather than the flat, 2-D app icons you see on your iPhone home screen now, this 3-D implementation would use a recessed “bento box” form factor, according to the filing. And wherever your gaze falls, a virtual spotlight would highlight what you’re looking at. You’d be able to switch this 3-D effect on and off using physical gestures like waves.

Apple’s method could also be implemented on desktops.

Fraunhofer's Full-HD Voice brings high fidelity VoLTE to Android smartphones

Fraunhofer's Full-HD Voice brings high fidelity VoLTE to Android smartphones
The audio nerds at Fraunhofer are set to raise the bar for Voice over LTE next week in Barcelona, as the company has announced a new technology known as Full-HD Voice. By leveraging the AAC-ELD codec, Fraunhofer claims that consumers will experience audio quality that rivals the experience of chatting face-to-face. Technically speaking, it's said the codec offers four times the audio bandwidth of regular phone calls and twice the bandwidth of HD voice services, all without an increase in bit rate. The technology will only be available for Android phones initially, but that seems like a fine place to start. The full PR is after the break -- presented in Full HD, of course.
