It was just about a year ago that we initially heard rumors of the
DirecTV Nomad, and after some
lengthy intrigue it is finally ready to launch. While its product page on the company's website isn't live yet, the folks at
DBSTalk have been testing it and already posted one of their detailed walkthroughs, revealing the box as a
TiVoToGo-style transcoder. Plug the $149 box into your whole home DVR network and it snags recorded programs and prepares them for viewing on other devices. Currently that list includes PCs with 1.2GHz processors or higher (no Atom powered netbooks invited to this party) and iOS devices, although an app for Android is apparently on the way. Compared to Dish Network's Sling-powered
TV Everywhere streaming approach, DirecTV's sideloading has the distinct benefit of offline viewing, but without access to live TV on the go. The iPhone app is already available in iTunes and some forum posters report they've already been able to preorder the unit, but check
DBSTalk for their breakdown and the device's manual in PDF form before making a decision on your
placeshifting future.

Looks like DISH Network's DISH Remote Access app is still the best choice for mobile viewing. I have the Sling Adapter that I got from my job at DISH, and I find it so convenient that I can watch live TV and my DVR recordings while I'm out of the house with the DRA app. All it requires is Wi-Fi or mobile 3G network and that's pretty much everywhere, and there’s no waiting to download before leaving home like with the Nomad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole it really is! DIRECTV's Nomad seem to work only on Apple devices right now which is good but still sucks because your limited to just Apple users. DIRECTV's only competition for satellite TV service is DISH Network and they came out with a TV everywhere a few years ago with the sling adapter. The Nomad limits you to just recorded programming and then at that only 20 hours are available to you. DISH Network version with the sling adapter is $50 cheaper for the adapter and lets you access both live TV and DVR content. It’s compatible with the 722 and 722k DVR. DISH also offers a 922 DVR that has sling capabilities built in and is 3D compatible. Working for DISH Network I can tell you DISH customers are now offered the sling adapter free after 45-75 days of activation.
